DAYTONA BEACH| Excitement was in the air at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach September 2.  Families, students, teachers, administrators, and friends from Volusia County Catholic Schools filled the stadium for Catholic Schools Night.  The Daytona Tortugas played the Fort Meyers Mighty Mussels. The game was kicked off at home plate by Volusia County schools’ principals and superintendent, Henry Fortier, each throwing out the “first pitch”.

Sacred Heart Catholic School 5th Grader, Ellen S., vibrantly sang the national anthem followed by a roaring applause from the crowd. Families and students from six Catholic schools enjoyed a fun night of baseball at the historical minor league baseball park where groundbreaking African-American baseball player Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated Major League Baseball spring training game in 1946.  The Catholic Schools Night at the Ballpark kicked off a long weekend and a nice break from school for the students.
