Recent Catholic Declaration on Life and Death

A health care advance directive is a written or oral statement made and witnessed in advance of serious illness or injury to address medical situations that may arise when a person becomes unable to make one’s own decisions. Executing an advance directive exercises good stewardship over the gift of life. The Catholic Declaration on Life and Death conforms to both Florida law and the teaching of the Church and is approved by the bishops of Florida.

In September, the bishops of Florida approved revisions to the CDLD and its companion document, Understanding the Catholic Declaration on Life and Death (UCDLD). The revisions were made to clarify Church teaching on end of life heath care and incorporate references to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ethical & Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, November 2009.
